For Many, Labor Day A Time Of Reflection
Workers Take Time Out To Celebrate Underfunded Pension Plan, Increased Irrelevancy of Unions
For most of the country, Labor Day marks the official end of summer and the start of a daily dose of reading, writing and random shootings in high schools. But for the country’s 15.5 million union workers, the day serves as a reminder of the hard-fought advances unions have won for the upper level officials who control them.
“We saw a small uptick in union members over the last two years,” notes Tony Vaselino, a high-ranking Teamster official. “So, despite overall membership declining by nearly half over the past 20 years, we can certainly use those figures to justify increased pay and benefits for all of our union officials. And that’s good, ’cause I really need to do some landscaping around my pool.”
Rank-and-file Teamster members cite their current pension plan being underfunded by over 49% as reason for celebration. As one worker put it, “Hey, my kid’s college account is underfunded by nearly 97%, so I think union officials are doing a pretty damn good job.”
