Three Ways to Get Your Employees Fired Up … To Get You Fired!
I’ve worked in a few places where I had some REALLY stupid bosses. OK, they weren’t stupid, but what they DID was stupid. So stupid that some of my co-workers felt they should sabotage the boss to get him/her fired. While the stories may make you laugh, they make me cry because they are true.
Without further ado, here are three of the things that made my co-workers want to get their boss fired.
1) Tell your team it’s their fault you have an ulcer, your wife is leaving you, and your dog died. Yes, it sounds like a bad country western song, but I had a co-worker tell me that our team leader told the team this in a meeting I’m very glad I missed.
2) Steal their lunch out of the fridge … and act like it’s no big deal … for a whole week! One of my friends experienced this one with her manager. Her manager (a woman) would take my friend’s sandwich, her yogurt, her cookies, whatever, right out of the fridge and eat it, saying,”There was no name on it so I thought it was leftovers from the party last week.” My friend fixed her manager: the brownies (three big whoppers) on Thursday had a few extra laxatives mixed, and the boss had to call in sick on Friday with no vacation time left. Of course, she said she was sick. The company had an as-many-as-you-need sick leave policy, so no firing. But darn close!
3) Take all the credit for everything your team does, and none of the blame. OK, so this one isn’t very funny, but this is one way to tick me off and make me want to get you fired. Now that I’m a manager, I’m used to sharing the credit as evenly as possible. When I was an associate, I had more than a few bosses who would steal my ideas as often as they could, and throw me under the bus whenever anything went wrong.
How does YOUR manager drive you crazy, so crazy you want to get her/him fired? Or have you only had fantastic bosses in your career?
